About Surah Al-Ikhlas

Four verses. The Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) said reciting it once is worth a third of the Quran, and that's not exaggeration. There's a hadith in Bukhari about it. There's another, also in Bukhari, about a companion who used to end every prayer at his local mosque with Al-Ikhlas. People started asking him why. He said, because it describes my Lord, and I love it. When the Prophet ﷺ heard about it he said: tell him Allah loves him back.

The reason this surah carries that kind of weight is that it answers the most basic question Islam asks: who is God? Allah is one. Allah is As-Samad, which is harder to translate than most people realise. It means something like "the one upon whom everything depends, who depends on nothing." Allah does not have children. Allah was not born. Nothing is comparable to Him.

Four verses, and that's the entire theology of the Quran. No Trinity. No demigods. No God who looks like us scaled up. Just oneness, dependence, no relations.

This is one of the three short surahs the Prophet ﷺ recited every night before sleep: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, three times each, blowing into his hands and wiping them over his body. A lot of Muslims still do this. It's also usually the first surah converts learn after Al-Fatihah, because if you're going to start praying to a God, you probably want to know who He is first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many verses are in Surah Al-Ikhlas?

Four. It's one of the shortest surahs in the Quran.

Why is Al-Ikhlas equal to one-third of the Quran?

There's a hadith in Bukhari where the Prophet ﷺ said reciting it is equivalent to reading a third of the Quran. The classical explanation is that the Quran's content sits in three buckets (law, story, theology) and Al-Ikhlas covers the entire theology bucket in four verses.

When should I recite Surah Al-Ikhlas?

Anytime. But the specific Sunnah is reciting it three times before sleep, along with Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blowing into your hands afterward and wiping them over your body. The Prophet ﷺ did this every night.
