How to Begin Reading the Quran If You're New to Islam

December 2025 · 6 min read

Whether you have just taken your Shahada, are exploring Islam with an open heart, or simply want to reconnect with the Quran after years away — beginning can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you approach this sacred text? This guide is for you.

Begin with Bismillah

Every surah of the Quran (except one) begins with the same words: Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem — “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” Before you read, say these words. They are a beginning, a blessing, and a reminder that you are entering sacred territory with Allah’s permission and grace.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

Start with Surah Al-Fatiha

Al-Fatiha, the Opening, is the first chapter of the Quran and the most recited chapter in Islam — it is read in every unit of every prayer. Its seven ayahs contain the essence of the entire Quran: praise of Allah, acknowledgement of His mercy, and a humble request for guidance. Read it slowly. Read its translation. Sit with it.

Don’t Rush — Read for Understanding

Many new readers make the mistake of trying to read as much as possible as quickly as possible. The Quran is not meant to be consumed — it is meant to be contemplated. The Arabic word for reciting the Quran — Tarteel — literally means to recite slowly and carefully. Even a few ayahs read with full understanding and presence is infinitely more valuable than pages read without comprehension.

Use a Translation You Can Actually Read

This is exactly why we distribute the Quran with Roman Urdu translation. If you are an Urdu speaker who is more comfortable reading in Roman script, this translation removes the last barrier between you and Allah’s words. Read the Arabic, then read the Roman Urdu translation, and let the meaning sink into your heart.

Establish a Daily Habit

Even five minutes of Quran reading every day — after Fajr, before sleep, or during a quiet moment — will transform your spiritual life over time. Consistency is more valuable than intensity. Make it a non-negotiable part of your day, like eating or sleeping.

“Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.” — Muslim

May Allah make your journey with the Quran one of joy, growth, and closeness to Him. It is never too late to begin — and the best time to start is now.
