About Surah Al-Fath

Al-Fath is the 48th surah, 29 verses, revealed in Madinah. The name means "the victory," and it was revealed about a specific event: the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.

The story is one of the most important in early Islamic history. In the 6th year after the migration, the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) led 1,400 Muslims toward Makkah to perform the lesser pilgrimage (umrah). The Quraysh stopped them at a place called Hudaybiyyah. After tense negotiations, a treaty was signed. Most of the Muslims were disappointed. The terms looked bad on the surface. The Muslims would have to go back without performing umrah. Anyone from Makkah who came to Madinah Muslim would be returned. The Prophet ﷺ accepted these terms anyway.

On the way back, this surah was revealed. It opens with one of the most striking lines in the Quran. "Indeed, We have given you a clear victory."

Most of the companions were confused. What victory? They had just been turned back. But within two years, the treaty led to mass conversion to Islam, including some of the most prominent leaders of Quraysh. Two years after that, Makkah opened its gates to the Prophet ﷺ peacefully. The "clear victory" the surah promised was the long arc, not the immediate moment. It was Hudaybiyyah that actually broke the resistance to Islam in Arabia, even though it didn't look that way at the time.

The surah is also famous for verse 29, which describes the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Strong against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking Allah's bounty and pleasure. Their mark is on their faces, from the trace of prostration.
