About Surah Al-Mulk

Al-Mulk is the 67th surah, 30 verses long, and one of the most-recited surahs in nightly Muslim devotion. There's a hadith where the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) said Al-Mulk will intercede for whoever recites it, until they're forgiven. He used to recite it every night before sleep, and it's a Sunnah a lot of Muslims still follow today.

The surah is Makki, revealed before the migration to Madinah. It opens with a powerful line. "Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He has power over all things." Then it walks through proofs of Allah's sovereignty. The seven layered heavens. Birds held up by nothing visible. The earth made walkable beneath your feet. The water you drink and where it would go if Allah took it away.

What makes Al-Mulk hit differently is the sections about the Day of Judgment. There are some genuinely terrifying verses describing Hellfire's anger, the way the people thrown into it will hear it inhale before they fall. But the surah keeps coming back to a question. "So have you not seen?" It asks the reader to look at the world they're in, the food on their table, the air in their lungs, and connect those everyday things to the One who set them up. The point isn't fear. The point is gratitude that comes from finally noticing.

If you're trying to build a habit of reciting Quran before sleep, this is the surah most scholars recommend starting with. Thirty verses, manageable to memorise, and the Prophet ﷺ specifically attached a promise of intercession to it.
