Surah Ya-Sin (يس) — Heart of the Quran
Loading 83 ayahs...
Yaseen is the 36th surah in the Quran, 83 verses, and there's a hadith where the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) called it the heart of the Quran. That's why it's the most recited surah outside of Al-Fatihah. People recite it on Friday, over the dying, after burials, when someone is sick. There's an old practice of memorising Yaseen even before tackling longer surahs, just because it comes up so often.
Most scholars including Ibn Abbas say Yaseen is a Makki surah, revealed before the Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah. The themes are the big Makkan ones. Belief in one God. Resurrection after death. Prophets sent to people who refused to listen. There's a powerful section in the middle of the surah about a town where the people rejected three messengers, and one believer from the town spoke up to defend them. He was killed for it. The surah then says he was given paradise, and that he wished his people knew what he now knew.
The reason Yaseen gets recited at deathbeds and after burials is rooted in a hadith, though the chain of that specific hadith is debated. Some scholars say the practice is well-established by the actions of the early generations even if the hadith itself isn't strong. Either way, the practice is widespread across the Muslim world. People also read it on Friday nights at home, sometimes as part of a weekly family routine.
If you've only memorised a few surahs and you're looking for the next one to learn, Yaseen is usually the answer. It's long but the rhythm makes it easier to pick up than you'd think.
How many verses are in Surah Yaseen?
Eighty-three verses. It's the 36th surah in the Quran.
Why is Yaseen called the heart of the Quran?
There's a hadith where the Prophet ﷺ said Yaseen is the heart of the Quran. Scholars explain this means it contains the central themes of the Quran (one God, resurrection, prophethood) in a single surah, which is why it gets recited so often.
When is Surah Yaseen recited?
A lot of times. On Friday, when someone is sick or dying, after burials, and as part of weekly devotional reading at home. The exact practices vary by community but the surah is one of the most-recited in the whole Quran.
