About Surah Ar-Rahman

Ar-Rahman is the 55th surah, and the moment you start reading it you'll notice something. One verse keeps coming back, again and again. "So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny?" It appears 31 times. There's no other surah in the Quran built around a refrain like this.

The "you both" in that verse is addressed to humans and jinn together. The surah is essentially a tour of Allah's favours, with this question repeated after each set. Allah created the sun and moon. So which favour will you both deny? He set up the earth for living things. So which favour will you both deny? He created humans from clay and jinn from fire. So which favour will you both deny? It keeps going through creation, then through paradise, then through the Day of Judgment.

Most scholars consider Ar-Rahman a Makki surah, though there's a minority view it was revealed in Madinah. Either way, it's known for being one of the most beautiful surahs to recite or listen to. The Arabic rhythm is unusually musical, and a lot of famous reciters have built their reputation on their version of Ar-Rahman.

There's also a saying from the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) where he called it "the bride of the Quran." That tells you something about how it's regarded. Most surahs are about a topic. Ar-Rahman is closer to a song of gratitude, structured so you can't stop noticing how much you've been given. The repeated question is the point. By the end you've been asked it 31 times, and you have to answer it for yourself.
