Surah Al-Munafiqun (الْمُنَافِقُون) — The Hypocrites
Loading 11 ayahs...
Al-Munafiqun is eleven verses, and it's about a specific group from the early Madinan period: the hypocrites. People who outwardly claimed to be Muslim but inwardly were against the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) and his community.
The surah is Madani, revealed after the Prophet ﷺ's migration to Madinah. The hypocrites were a real political faction in the city, led by a man named Abdullah ibn Ubayy, and the surah confronts them directly. It opens by quoting their words. "When the hypocrites come to you, they say, 'We bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.' Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars."
The surah is unusual because it doesn't try to argue them into faith. It diagnoses them. It says they took their oaths as a cover. They turn people away from Allah's path. Their hearts are sealed because they believed and then disbelieved. They look impressive on the outside, well-dressed and well-spoken, but they're like propped-up logs, hollow inside.
The closing verses pivot to the believers with a warning. "Don't let your wealth or your children distract you from remembrance of Allah." Then a direct command: spend from what Allah has given you before death comes, because once death arrives, it's too late to ask for more time.
Al-Munafiqun is one of the surahs the Prophet ﷺ used to recite during Friday prayer, paired with Surah Al-Jumu'ah right before it. A lot of imams still keep this Sunnah today.
