About Surah Yusuf

Yusuf is the 12th surah, 111 verses, and one of the most beloved surahs in the entire Quran. What makes it unique is its structure. It tells one continuous story from beginning to end. Every other prophet's story in the Quran is split into pieces and scattered across different surahs. Yusuf gets a single full narrative, in order, from his childhood dream all the way to its fulfilment decades later.

The surah is Makki, and it was revealed during a difficult period. The Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) had just lost his wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib in the same year. He was getting rejected by Makkan leaders, attacked, and was about to migrate to Madinah. In that context, Allah revealed the entire story of Yusuf. A young man thrown into a well by his own brothers, sold as a slave, falsely accused, imprisoned for years, then eventually elevated to the highest rank in Egypt. The story is, on the surface, about patience through betrayal. But it's also a message to the Prophet ﷺ: this kind of pattern has happened before. The end is good, even when the middle looks impossible.

There are some unforgettable lines. Yusuf's father Yaqub saying "patience is most fitting" when his sons lie to him about what happened. Yusuf saying "the soul commands evil" when explaining how he resisted temptation. The closing scene of forgiveness, when Yusuf's brothers stand before him in Egypt, and he says, "There is no blame on you today. May Allah forgive you, for He is the most merciful of the merciful."
