Surah Al-Bayyinah (الْبَيِّنَة) — The Clear Proof
Loading 8 ayahs...
Al-Bayyinah is eight verses long. The name means "the clear proof," and the surah is about exactly that: the proof Allah sent to humanity.
There's a debate among scholars about whether Al-Bayyinah is Makki or Madani. Most lean Madani, including Ibn Abbas, but it's not a settled question. What's clear is the topic. The surah is about the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) and the polytheists who, the surah says, would not be left in their state of disagreement until clear proof came to them. That proof is the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH), reciting purified scriptures.
The middle of the surah makes a sharp point. The People of the Book had received their own revelations earlier and had divided over them, even after the proof had come. The surah then lays out what Allah always asked from people: sincere worship, prayer, and giving zakah. That's the essence, and it hasn't changed across the messengers.
The surah ends on a striking pair of verses. The worst of creation are those who reject the truth after the proof comes to them. The best of creation are those who believe and do good. Their reward is gardens with rivers running underneath, where they will live forever, and Allah will be pleased with them, and they with Him. There's a hadith where the Prophet ﷺ once read this surah to one of his companions, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and told him Allah had specifically commanded him to recite it to Ubayy. Ubayy started crying.

What is Surah Al-Bayyinah about?
The clear proof Allah sent to humanity through the Prophet ﷺ, after earlier nations had divided over their own revelations. The surah ends by contrasting the worst of creation (those who reject truth after seeing the proof) with the best of creation (those who believe and do good).
