Surah Al-Qadr (الْقَدْر) — The Power
Loading 5 ayahs...
Al-Qadr is a short surah, only five verses, but it's one of the most-recited in the last ten nights of Ramadan. It's the surah about Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, the night when the Quran first came down.
The surah opens with a fact most Muslims know but is worth saying directly. "Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Power." The "it" is the Quran. From that night, revelation began coming to the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH), and continued for the next 23 years. Then the surah asks a question. "What can make you understand what the Night of Power is?" The answer is the most quoted line of the surah. "The Night of Power is better than a thousand months."
A thousand months is roughly 83 years. Most people don't live that long. So one night of worship done right, in the right night, is worth more than a full life of worship outside it. The surah goes on to say that on this night the angels and Jibreel descend, with permission of their Lord, for every matter, and the night is peace until the break of dawn.
The exact night of Laylat al-Qadr isn't specified, but the Prophet ﷺ told Muslims to look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, with the 27th being the most likely. So Muslims spend those nights praying, reading Quran, and asking forgiveness, hoping they catch the right one.
